Operation Firewood

Imagine children shivering in their own homes, whether a tumbled-down shack, a trailer with broken windows, or even traditional Hogan with a leaky roof and wall cracks letting in the stiff, cold winds at night.

Or think about the elderly, already susceptible to pneumonia, spending a good portion of what little they have on firewood to heat their homes.

Winter is brutally harsh for many Navajo families — especially single mothers and elders who face an impossible choice: buy food or buy firewood. Without NAER's help, some will not have the warmth they need to survive the freezing months ahead.

Operation Firewood provides lifesaving heat to those living in remote areas, often miles from their nearest neighbors and cut off by ice-covered roads. A full truckload of firewood costs just $160 to deliver, but the warmth, safety, and hope it brings to a Navajo family are truly priceless.

Navajo Women with firewood

"The firewood keeps me warm. Native American Emergency Relief is so special to help my community and school. No one will ever do what you do. It takes a lot to work out here. May the Great Spirits protect you. Ahéhee’ (Thank you!)”
