Imagine driving 3 hours to buy groceries or feeding your children dinner made from processed food staples purchased at the local gas station convenience store. Unfortunately for many Navajo parents this is their day-to-day reality substituting trips to the grocery store with fast food meals and convenience store shopping.
Add to this the high cost of transportation to access healthy foods and you have a recipe for poor health and alarming rates of obesity and diabetes on the reservation. We have an amazing chance to make a positive impact on Navajo communities through our Garden to Table initiative.
